US: Meatless Monday campaign criticised 21 Oct 2009
AMI Senior Vice President for Public Affairs, Janet Riley, has during an appearance on CNN's 'Lou Dobbs Tonight' criticised the Baltimore City Schools adoption of the 'Meatless Monday' campaign, a program done in association with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Janet Riley mispoke on CNN when she implied that meat is the only source of protein. The Baltimore City School System's dietician has designed a menu that meets or exceeds all USDA dietary and nutritional requirements for the school lunch program. Grains and legumes are sources of high quality protein. The U.S. population now derives 65% of its dietary protein from animal sources compared with 30% for the rest of the world. The USDA itself states that males in the US are consuming 170% of recommended daily allowance for meat and women about 135% of RDA. Moving toward compliance with USDA RDA is a good thing, not the deprivation scenario presented by Ms. Riley.
