During the first half of the current year, Argentina exported over 54,300 tonnes of beef to Russia, being the second largest beef supplier to Russia, after Brazil.

In 2008, the level of the Argentine beef exports to Russia reached 65,800 tonnes (8.6% in total imports), making the country only fifth in terms of beef export volumes to Russia.

A successful performance this year is really surprising, given the general downturn experienced today by the Argentine agriculture industry, according to the U.S. experts.

According to the latest estimates of the U.S Ministry of Agriculture, total beef exports from Argentina next year will not exceed 390,000 tonnes, which is 30% lower than in 2009.

This year the export potential of Argentine beef is estimated at the level of 560,000 tonnes. The main reasons for future reduction are low returns of the industry and the severe drought (the most devastating for the last 50 years), which has caused a serious reduction in the number of cattle in the country.

Some experts suggest that Argentina will even be forced to import beef. However the Ministry of Agriculture of Argentina has already dismissed these reports.
