Australia: Kangaroo meat - new quotas for 2010 28 Dec 2009

Reports state that nearly 2 million kangaroos will be killed in 2010 under new quotas set by the Queensland government.

According to a report by ABC News, Mike Birchley from the Department of Environment and Resource Management stated that the quotas that have been set by the Queensland government were done so by making use of population surveys and scientific modelling.
 
The Department of Environment and Resource Management has said that the quotas include more than a million eastern greys and 880,000 red kangaroos.
 
Russian ban on kangaroo meat
Earlier this year Russia placed a ban on the import of kangaroo meat from Australia, according to the ABC News report, the ban on this meat has made it a hard year for the industry. In 2009 saw only 51 percent of its quota was filled – due to the Russian ban.
