US: Consumers have trust in beef safety, not food safety 09 Mar 2009
Consumers have continued to be confident about beef safety, according to results of a survey carried out.
Even though there has been a rise in the general concern about food safety over the last months, consumers continue to be confident in the safety of beef products, according to the results of a survey by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.
Increasing recalls
According to reports, over two-thirds of the surveyed consumers stated that they think the number of food recalls and food borne illnesses is on the rise. 49% of consumers answered the same in November last year.

"This survey confirms food safety is on consumers’ minds, and we want them to know it’s on our minds, as well," stated James O. Reagan, Ph.D., chairman of the Beef Industry Food Safety Council and senior vice president of research, education and innovation with the N.C.B.A.
Safe wholesome food
81% of respondents stated that beef industry, which includes ranchers to processors and retailers, is pulling together in order to give consumers safe, wholesome food, when the respondents were particularly asked about the beef industry’s efforts to improve beef safety.

78% were in agreement that safeguards developed by beef-industry scientists have made ground beef safer than ever before.
The national survey of 1,023 Americans had a margin of error of +/- 3.1% and was funded by The Beef Checkoff.
"We’re pleased that consumers recognise the work the industry is doing to protect food safety," added Reagan.
