According to JBS, thin profit margins aren't the only challenge facing the beef industry.
JBS outlines challenges for beef industry

At the Idaho Cattle Association's annual meeting, Chandler Keyes, ombudsman for JBS, shared his top five list of challenges:

1) Food safety. "This E. coli deal is with us and it's going to be with us until we manage it out of feedlots, packing plants and further processing. Consumers will demand it."

2) Trade. JBS sees opportunities to export beef products into places where it has not traditionally been part of the diet. For example, moving canned beef products into Africa so that refrigeration isn't required. "A beef eater anywhere in the world is good for us as a company and as an industry," Keyes said.

3) Environment. Suburban consumers are green consumers, he said, and clean air and clean water are important to them.

4) Animal welfare issues. "People understand animals get killed so they can eat meat. They get it, they just want animals to be treated humanely at the point where they are killed," Keyes said. "We must police ourselves or we will be regulated first at the state level and then at the federal level."

5) Sustainability. The argument between sustainable agriculture and production agriculture is dangerous when one out of six Americans is hungry, Keyes said.
