Mettler Toledo Safeline: New canning inspection systems 17 Sep 2009

Mettler Toledo Safeline has launched two new canning x-ray inspection systems designed to allow thorough and reliable inspection of metal cans.
Mettler Toledo Safeline: New canning inspection systems
The new CanCheK HS (high speed) system has been designed for use on production lines that transfer cans which are typically up to 75mm diameter x 108mm high, (400g/12oz) at very high speeds. For lines that process a wide variety of can sizes up to 200mm diameter x 243mm high at various speeds, Mettler Toledo Safeline has developed the new R50-400 AFD (adjustable focal distance) system.

Marek Rycojc, product inspection manager at Metter Toledo, commented: “Quality control within metal cans can be extremely challenging for food manufacturers. Its packaging is much denser and it usually contains high density product, so if the can diameter is large, more product is put in the path of the x-ray beam, making the detection of small contaminants located on the base or side walls of the can difficult, especially if it has ribbing on the side walls.

“Thorough inspection is essential as the raw materials can often contain contaminants and the manufacturing filling process itself is fraught with potential risks. We have developed high performance x-ray systems that offer the most effective tool for this type of application. They have the ability to check fill levels (volumes) at speeds over 600cpm, as well as the ability to check for dented/damaged cans, ensuring pack integrity. All of these functions are performed simultaneously at line speeds of over 100m/min.

“Our two new premium inspection machines have set a new standard in x-ray can inspection and provide manufacturers with an economically viable solution, which delivers the peace of mind and reliability that comes with any of our x-ray inspection systems.”

The new CanCheK HS dual split beam x-ray system has a new upward angle on the beams and a much reduced focal distance. This provides the same x-ray flux as an x-ray tank four times more powerful, giving improved detection, but at very low power. In addition, the angle between the two horizontal beams has been reduced, allowing cans to run touching, with no spacing required at high speeds of up to 1500cpm.

As well as featuring the same upward angle on the x-ray beam, the new R50-400 AFD single beam x-ray system includes a reduced starting focal distance. This provides an increase in x-ray flux by a factor of nearly four, giving improved detection both on small cans at high speeds and also on physically larger, denser cans that require more x-ray penetration. The major benefit of this new system is that the collimator and x-ray tank is adjustable, allowing the x-ray tank to be moved forward and closer to the detector for small cans and then automatically driven outwards to accommodate larger cans. This means that for the first time a wide range of different size cans can be optimally inspected on the same production line.

Both systems feature user-friendly operation and setup while also minimising downtime and required training. As standard, all of Mettler Toledo Safeline horizontal models feature variable scan speed and rejection is never compromised. They also provide adaptive filtering – dynamically changing for every can, so that detection is optimised and false rejects minimised. A low power x-ray tank means no water cooling is required and the system has a very low cost of ownership.
