Phthalates - phased out by testing lab 23 Oct 2008

In a bid to conform with the European Union (EU) standards for imported processed food products, Thailand’s first laboratory for testing plasticizers is to open in January 2009.
This will set an international standard, in confirmation of EU regulations on chemicals that come into contact with foods, reports the Department of Social Science Services director Pathom Yamkateng.

Phthalates identified and phased out
'Phthalates', used to soften plastics and make them flexible for use in  packaging food products, can now be identified and phased out in confirmation of the growing concerns about their effect on human health, he said.

Yamkateng added that with the opening of the new laboratory, “Thai manufacturers will be more confident that their products won’t risk being sent back after exporting them to Europe.”
