Packaging
UK meat packaging waste to be studied 18 Nov 2009
A joint study by food industry experts will research the amount of meat and fish and its associated packaging ending up as waste in the UK retail supply chain.
The researchers will also identify how to potentially reduce packaging waste in order to realise cost savings and environmental benefits for the businesses participating.
Data will be collected for four types of meat (poultry, beef, lamb and pork) along the wholesale and retail supply chain within the UK. IGD, food and grocery experts, will be doing the research on meat in partnership with MLCSL Consulting (a commercial subsidiary of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board), the British Poultry Council, and Cranfield University. The research will connect into the work being currently done by English Beef & Lamb Executive (EBLEX) and Defra Meat Roadmap.
Researchers will be contacting companies across the supply chain to participate in the project and provide data. Benchmarking reports will be developed and aggregated research results will be shared with the industry.
The overal project will be led by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) and Envirowise.
