Russia to start development of sheep industry 21 Jan 2010

Russia plans to start an active development of the national sheep industry in the coming years.
Russia to start development of sheep industry

According to local analysts, the initial stage the implementation of the project will come from massive public investment, as it was the case of the Russian pig and cattle industries.

Currently there is a growing demand for lambs of meat breeds in Russia, however, there are only three large farms in the country involved in meat sheep breeding.

At present the average per capita mutton consumption in the country is no more than 1,5 kg per year. One of the main reasons of low consumption of mutton in the country and the lack of interest in sheep farming is closely associated with almost complete absence of industrial slaughterhouses and meat enterprises for sheep meat processing in the country.

The lack of quality production facilities in recent years has already resulted in the production of low-quality lamb and mutton meat. Currently, Dagestan region (North Caucasus) remains the major sheep region in the country with the total herd nearly five million sheep.
