"With the beginning of the crisis the food ration of Russian consumers has changed. Instead of more expensive beef and pork Russians are buying cheaper poultry meat ," said Sergey Yushin, the head of the executive committee of the National Meat Association. “In this regard the per capita meat consumption in the country this year will decline below the 65 kg mark," Yushin said.

He also added that during the period of 1999-2007 the consumption of red meat in Russia has increased from 42 kilograms to 59 kilograms.

Yushin says an increase in inflation in Russia is a problem this year with lower class cutting back consumption of red meat.
"The middle class is the major market for red meat consumption in Russia."

According to experts estimates, by the end of the current year, the per capita red meat consumption in the country will decrease by 3.5 kg compared to previous year, but it should not fall below 60 kg per year.
