Russia: US poultry ban may cause price hike for meat products 12 Jan 2010
A recent ban on imports of chlorine-treated US poultry which has been imposed by the Russian government may lead to a significant rise in the cost of meat products in Russia due to the use of more expensive ingredients by local meat processors.

Until recently, US poultry has not only been presented in a wide assortment on the shelves of Russian supermarkets, but also used as a relatively cheap ingredient in the production of sausages, frankfurters and other meat products.

According to analysts’ estimates, the Russian ban on imports of US chicken meat will trigger price increases for meat products in Russia up to 15%-20% by February.

One solution to this situation may be to resume the use of genetically-modified soybeans in the production of sausages.
In Europe, GMO products are currently used only in the production of cheap food, with mandatory label information, whereas Russia still has no such rule.
