On the positive side for meat exports has been the strength of the Euro against the Sterling, however, on the downside is that a number of European countries are still in a deep recession, thus cutting-off sales of the Scottish speciality, premium quality beef.

Also, competition is heating-up. With the collapse of their economy, the Irish are also trying to off-load beef in the EU. There’s also competition from South America, although most of their meat generally heads to lower value parts of the global market, like Russia.

However, despite the competition, Scottish meat industry analysts believe there is a growing market for Scottish beef in the EU, although it would be very much at the high-end of the market, heading to top restaurants and quality retailers.
