Australia: abattoir criticised following worker’s death 18 Feb 2009

A coroner stated that workplace injuries did not play a role in the death of a man in south-west Victoria, but the abattoir has been criticised.
Aaron Willis, 20, of Warrnambool was discovered dead in a house in May 2006.

Willis passed out while working at the Midfield Meats abattoir in Warrnambool nearly a year earlier; this resulted in him to fall into a trough.

Investigation
A coronial inquest investigated to see whether the workplace occurrence contributed to Willis' death. However,Coroner Ian Von Einem yesterday concluded there was no link, and discovered Willis had died of asphyxiation during an epileptic attack at his house.

Collapse not reported
According to reports, Von Einem has criticised Midfield Meats, he stated that Willis' collapse at work was not reported to WorkSafe.

Also, Von Einem said Willis had unveiled his history of fits when he began work at the abattoir, but this information was not given to his supervisors, reports stated further.
