Australia: Abattoir shuts its doors – workers jobless 12 Feb 2009

The current global economic downturn is seen as the cause for the closure of an abattoir in Western Australia. the South West Meat Processors facility has closed.
The South West Meat Processors facility in Waroona, near Harvey, is set to shut its doors on Friday. The closure will leave over 40 workers jobless.

According to Geoff Murray of the WA Farmers Federation, the closures could mean farmers get paid less for their stock.

"It certainly takes another competitor out of the saleyard and the competition is certainly what keeps the price of sheep meats at current levels. We're certainly disappointed to see that competition decreased,” stated Murray.

Concern over skilled workers
Murray has stated that he is concerned about the number of skilled workers losing their jobs in the industry.

"That's not a good position to be in, because many of those employees would be skilled labourers, skilled employees that this industry needs."

Harvey Beef in temporarily suspended its operations last month and earlier this week, the processor cut 18 workers.
