Australia: Abattoir to cut back on operating hours 26 Jun 2009

A consideration of cutting on operating hours is taking place. The abattoir at Cowra in Central West NSW, Australia is making these considerations due to the sky rocketing lamb prices.
According to a report by ABC Rural, lamb prices reached a record high in the state two weeks ago, with a pen of lambs at Carcoar selling for $188 each.

Demand has dropped
Chris Cummins, from Cowra Meat Processors, states that the demand for lamb has decreased due to it becoming too pricey. Cummins further stated that the abattoir is now killing about 700 fewer lambs daily, and it's considering having a four-day week.

"If we drop a day and spread that kill over four days it's more economical,” he stated.
