Australia: Call for council run abattoir 23 Apr 2009

A group of councils in the Gulf country of north-west Queensland, Australia, are to look into setting up an abattoir at Normanton.
According to reports, Gulf graziers transport cattle more than 1000 kilometres for processing, with the closest major meatworks being in Townsville.

Local abattoir concept
The idea for a local abattoir has come from Georgetown grazier Warren Bethel. Bethel states that a group of councils could operate it with the assistance of others.

"There's three companies who could have a look at it. You could form a co-op between councils and producers and aboriginal organisations and see if we can come up with something under our own steam," said Bethel.
