Australia: Camel abattoir facing increased demands 18 May 2009

According to an abattoir manager, governments should invest in camel meat for export, as opposed to culling the pest in outback Australia.
Demand
According to a report by abc.net, Ivan Coulter stated that he can't keep up with the demand for camel meat.

The demand for camel meat is currently from Muslim communities around the globe.

Job creation
Coulter further stated that the camel industry is creating jobs in regional centres and remote Aboriginal communities.

"We still have government departments out there that still insist on culling, instead of working with Aboriginal communities and bringing export dollars to South Australia. The labour force is there and Peterborough is quite excited about the new industry, and it's bringing a bit more life back into a township that was struggling for an industry," stated Coulter.

Coulter says that the abattoir at Peterborough in South Australia is one of only two in the country that processes camel meat.
