Australia: Study on viability of abattoir 09 Sep 2009

A study will be carried out to see whether an abattoir will be feasible in the region of far north Western Australia.
This Kimberley region will be under the spotlight, according to the state government, the study is a reaction to urges from pastoralists to provide an alternative to live export, and allow stations with shorthorns to actually offload cattle and make a profit, stated a report by ABC Rural.

Abattoirs that are the closest to Kimberley are Townsville in Queensland (2526 km away) or Gingin in the south (3086 km away).

Government should invest
"If it's deemed viable and feasible that an abattoir is suited for a place like Derby and if it will stimulate economic development opportunities and lead to employment, especially employment for indigenous people, then absolutely the Commonwealth Government needs to invest," stated Joe Ross, Chair of the Commonwealth's Northern Australia Land and Water Taskforce.
