India: Sheep traders call for better facilities at abattoir 16 Feb 2009

A sheep and goat traders association has moved the Supreme Court seeking a direction to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for the creation of adequate infrastructural facilities at the recently opened modern mechanised slaughterhouse at Ghazipur, according to reports.
The Sheep and Goats Brokers' Association along with the Sheep & Goats Commission, in a petition, alleged that the MCD had not created adequate facilities for livestock traders despite an apex court's earlier direction in 2005.

Inadequacies
Saud Ahmed, counsel for the petitioner, has stated that as per the 2005 directive about 300 livestock traders operating at the Idgah slaughterhouse complex were to be moved to the Ghazipur abattoir premises, however, only approximately 96 hutments was created at the new slaughterhouse, which is significantly inadequate.

Hundreds of sheep and goat sellers come from different parts of India and it would be quite difficult for them to operate from such a limited numbers of hutments, the petitioners have stated.

File intervention application
A bench headed by Justice S B Sinha, however, asked the petitioners to file an intervention application regarding the situation as the court is already monitoring the slaughterhouse issue on the original writ petition filed by the Buffalo Traders Association, further reports have stated.
