JBS increasing slaughter in Brazil 05 Mar 2009

JBS S.A. has announced it will be raising slaughter capacity in Brazil by 10%.
The beef producer has planned this as a two-year process.

Increasing capacity
Jerry O'Callaghan, investor relations director, has stated that the Sao Paulo-based firm has for the last year been slaughtering almost 19,000 head per day and plans to add another 1,000 head of capacity by the end of this year.

Two year period
"Over a two-year period we are in the process of adding about 10% to capacity," said O’Callaghan.

O'Callaghan further stated that JBS has been pushing money back into the plants in Brazil over the last three to four years.

However, due to the short supply of cattle there, the firm has been under utilising its capacity.

"Thus, we are looking to ramp up production now as facilities owned by competition may be reducing theirs," added O’Callaghan.
