Slaughtering

Namibia: Meatco cleared of FMD 12 Nov 2008

Slaughtering activities at Meatco's Windhoek abattoir were stopped for 12 hours.
The halt came last week following the discovery of two cattle with walking difficulties, raising fears of a possible foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) infection.

According to reports the animals came from Rietfontein, a few kilometres from the border with Botswana, where FMD broke out a few weeks ago.

Government culling to prevent disease spread
The Botswana government is culling livestock in the area to prevent the disease from spreading further.

Monja Viljoen of the Meatco communications department has said that blood samples were immediately taken from the two cattle and State veterinarians conducted tests.

"Within 12 hours, the results came out and they were negative," Viljoen said.

Slaughtering started up again, after receiving the test news.

Longer shifts at the abattoir will lessen the backlog.
