Philippines: Lingayen Class AA abattoir construction 19 May 2009

A Class AA slaughterhouse is set to rise very soon in the capital town of Lingayen, according to Mayor Ernesto "Jonas" Castaneda.
Castaneda told the Pangasinan Press and Radio Club Kapihan sa Lenox forum Tuesday that P13 million was set aside for the project that will serve not only the needs of the town but also neighboring municipalities. A Class AA abattoir is authorized to supply meat to the town where it is located and to its neighbours.

Only recently, the town's temporary slaughterhouse was portrayed negatively on national television. Footages showed dirty facilities and interviews of unidentified complaining local residents.

Funding
Funding for the slaughterhouse project will come from the P45-million-loan with the Land Bank of the Philippines which is due for release, the mayor said. Other projects to be funded by the loan include purchase of a firetruck, loader, dumptruck, service or patrol vehicles for the barangays and the police and development of a lot to be used as cemetery, he said.

The facility will be constructed at the old abattoir site in barangay Domalandan West, he disclosed.

Bidding was scheduled next month which is time for the release of the loan, he said.

A refrigerated van will also be purchased to make sure that the meat delivered to the markets is safe and fresh, he said.

Castaneda said that his administration is unrelenting in the enforcement of sanitation laws and ordinances, citing the apprehension last month of suspected "double-dead" meat.
