Philippines: new slaughterhouse makes ‘hot meat’ a priority 06 Nov 2008

In Bacolod, Philippines, a new slaughterhouse became fully operational on Tuesday this week.
City officials have announced a crackdown against ‘hot meat’ which could be prove unsafe.

The mayor of Bacolod, Evelio Leonardia has said that all slaughtering should be done at the new slaughterhouse in barangay Handumanan in Bacolod city.

‘Hot meat’ subject to confiscation
Meat of animals not slaughtered at the new slaughterhouse will be considered “hot meat" and will be subject to confiscation, according to reports.

Informed
According to city Veterinarian, Adelo Daroy, all meat vendors and traders and the public have been informed and made aware of the implementation of City Ordinance 459.

Daroy further stated that any meat in transit should be accompanied by a current meat inspection certificate signed by the meat inspector assigned at the new slaughterhouse.

Illegal slaughter
If meat if transported and discovered without a meat inspection certificate it will immediately be considered as evidence that it is illegally slaughtered and will be subject to appropriate action, Daroy stated.

Daroy has stressed that they will confiscate and condemn hot meat to protect public health.

Post-mortem and ante-mortem examinations should be conducted to determine whether animals have diseases or whether it is contaminated, he added.

Public demand of inspection certificates
Daroy has advised the public to constantly ask vendors for meat inspection certificates.
