While the UKs network of small to medium-sized abattoirs is declining with increasing costs and legislation, one South Wales family-owned slaughterhouse is bucking the trend.

The Maddock Kembery Meats slaughtering operation at Garth now ranks among the country’s most modern, following a £500,000 investment.
 
Despite the economic downturn, prudent management and some shrewd equipment buying has seen a three-fold increase in throughput capacity.
 
Previously, the plant could only handle 300 lambs, 30 cattle and 100 pigs a week. Today, there is sufficient capacity to either kill up to 1,000 lambs, 60 cattle or 300 pigs a day.
