UK: New abattoir rules apply 05 Jan 2010

At the start of the year, new rules pertaining to abattoirs and livestock producers across the UK have taken effect as of 1 January 2010.
The new rules state that abattoirs are checking food chain information for cattle, sheep and goats that are slaughtered for human consumption, according to a report by Farmer’s Weekly Interactive.

Paperwork on animals
The report states that animals coming into the slaughterhouse must have paperwork that provides information about diseases, medicine withdrawal periods and movement restrictions on the holding of origin.

Animals that enter the slaughterhouse, and do not have the accompanied paperwork required, may not be slaughtered without the approval of Meat Hygiene Service.

The information that is gathered via the new rules may be used by veterinarians and operators, when it comes to processing and inspections.

Slaughterhouse operators are able to decide how they would like to receive the necessary information.
