Total US capital expenditures for machinery for red meat slaughtering and processing was US$1.01-billion, according to the 2007 US Cenus of Economic Data report.
The US government reported the total was split around 50/50 between slaughtering and processing. It also reported there were almost three thousand plants in total, so the average capital expenditure for machinery per plant was US$337,000.

However, poultry capital expenditure for machinery per plant was more than three times as high as red meat.
