USDA: Humane handling materials for small plants 06 Mar 2009
According to USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service, it is offering a free DVD and companion booklet called, "Humane Handling of Livestock with Dr. Temple Grandin."
The DVD and booklet are aimed at assisting small and very small establishments avoid the pitfalls of non-compliance.

The booklet runs through the four key elements of the approach FSIS recommends, which includes treating livestock in ways which minimises excitement, discomfort and accidental injury.
According to reports, the booklet also provides examples of types of observations FSIS inspectors make to see that there is compliance with the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act and with good commercial practices.

Humane handling
Dr. Temple Grandin, a world-renowned expert in humane handling methods, presents the information in the DVD, which includes a Spanish version of the presentation.
Grandin provides guidelines in order to assist in improving humane handling practices. She also walks through the scoring system she developed for objectively evaluating animal handling and stunning.
