UK: Ban Lithuanian meat brand 18 Nov 2008
In the UK there has been a ban on the sale of a brand of Lithuanian meat products.

The ban by the Bedfordshire Country Council follows possible contamination with high levels of Listeria monocytogenes.
Recall
According to reports, JSC Samsonas, from Kaunas, Lithuania, has recalled all its meat products which are labelled with the ‘Samsonas’ brand for the UK market on a precautionary basis. This has resulted in the Food Standards Agency releasing a food alert.

Action taken to withdraw products
Even though there have been no local businesses which appear on the list of retailers that have been supplied with the products, Bedfordshire County Council trading standards officers and local council environmental health officers will be contacting local retailers to make sure action is taken to withdraw meat products which are labelled with the Samsonas brand.

Public safety a priority
“The safety of the public is our first priority. Our trading standards officers, together with environmental health officers, are working closely with local retailers to ensure meat products sold under the Samsonas brand are withdrawn,” said Peter Hollick, Bedfordshire County Council cabinet member for community services.

The harmful bacteria were discovered in Samsonas’ Ear and Tongue Rolls and were well above legal limits.
Other products withdrawn include cooked sausages, ham and beef.
According to JSC Samsonas, compensation will be available for retailers with official documentation and agreement between both parties.
